Dimension U Print 3D Printer Wins SEMA Editor’s Choice Award

Each year at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, PM’s auto editors scour the convention center to find the most interesting new products. Despite the economic downturn, this year’s show was full of innovation. We saw plenty of cool tools, smart fixes and auto products that make motoring just a little more fun. Dimension U Print 3D Printer

$14,900
Why it Matters: Around here, if it’s good enough for Jay Leno, it’s good enough for PM. Jay and all the guys at Jay’s Big Dog Garage have been using their $30,000 Dimension 3D printer for about a year and have created some amazing parts for Jay’s classic cars – completely from scratch and in house. Now Dimension has a more affordable version that could help schools and small businesses learn the art of rapid prototyping. A plastic feed, not unlike string trimmer line, is melted and formed into a perfect 3D plastic cast of the part. Later, that part can easily be reproduced in metal. The price is still steep, but we imagine this type of home fabrication will become more common as prices drop further.
