2010 Cadillac SRX and 2010 STS Sport Wagon First Look: Crisp Design, V6 Power and Nearly 26 MPG
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Here at the annual Concours d'Elegance car exhibit, Cadillac gives us a sneak peek at what lies beyond the full-size Escalade SUV. The Escalade has been a hit for Caddy, but with fuel efficiency on the minds of every buyer (even Cadillac buyers), the brand needs more wagons that can transport people and stuff—only with better gas mileage and a bit more poise when the road bends, too. So Cadillac has two truck alternatives on deck, ready for consumers looking to make that switch. —Ben Stewart

2010 SRX

The current SRX, which launched in 2004, did an admirable job of providing fuel-efficient and sporty transport. However, it hasn't been the runaway hit Caddy was hoping for. It could have been the styling. To our eye, the SRX looked a bit like a Caddy wagon on stilts, instead of the cohesive crossover—a look pioneered by Lexus and adopted by Acura, BMW and even Lincoln.

In terms of proportions, the 2010 SRX certainly apes the design of the rest of the class. And it could be a body double for the Cadillac Provoq concept that debuted at January's Consumer Electronics show. But compared to the hot new CTS Sport Wagon pictured below, there wouldn't be much debate about which one we'd choose to haul around the family.

Cadillac hasn't revealed any mechanical details on the new SRX, but it's a safe bet that it will have a version of Caddy's 3.6-liter V6 under the hood and optional all-wheel drive.

Ten years ago, a sporty Cadillac wagon would have seemed, well, odd. After all, a front-drive 1998 Cadillac DeVille would have made an awful candidate. But that's the old Cadillac. GM's flagship marque has done an admirable job transforming its cars and its image from that of a maker of soft and stodgy rides, to a real import fighter. The timing is right for Caddy to take on the best sport wagons from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. With the attractive, all-new Cadillac CTS sheetmetal as a basis to work from, GM's design team has created a car that, if we're honest, looks even better as a wagon.

The mechanicals are essentially the same as the sedan's. That means you'll get a choice of two 3.6-liter V6s, the most powerful of which churns out 304 hp. And both engines are matched to a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual. All-wheel drive will be an option. We know that a 250-hp 2.9-liter V6 diesel is being developed for Europe too. And we hope it comes stateside to join the lineup.

The wagon rides on the same 113.4-in. wheelbase as the sedan, yet the wagon is 0.3 in. shorter. And despite the aggressive roofline, the CTS Sport Wagon offers 25 cu. ft. of cargo space. That's more than the BMW 3 Series wagon. There are new 19-in. wheels and a panoramic rear sunroof available too.

We'd like to see this wagon reach out to the fringes of the market. Perhaps the two-mode hybrid system could be adapted to work on this wagon. Even more exciting would be a 556-hp CTS-V Sport Wagon. Let's hope that one is in the works.

We do know that there will be a CTS Coupe coming soon, too—if two doors suit your needs better than five.
