How and When to Use Polyurethane in Woodworking

Developed as a substitute for rubber during World War II. Today, when a woodworker says “poly,” the polyurethane under discussion is a tough, moisture-resistant film finish available in various levels of gloss. The same chemical constituents that make this polymer are also used in polyurethane caulk, paints, glue and spray foam insulation. A chemical product doesn’t get much more versatile than that.

Expert Tip

Water-based poly wood finish offers low odor and easy cleanup, but the water in it can cause woodgrain to rise up and roughen the finish. It can also cause waterborne materials (extractives ) in some woods such as cedar to leach out and foul the finish. Test it on scrap before doing the actual project.
