Bosch Rotary Hammer

Bosch Rotary Hammer

How it works: This SDS rotary hammer is basically a hammer drill on steroids. Unlike hammer drills homeowners may be familiar with (i.e. regular drills adapted to bore in masonry), this tool is a masonry drill that’s adapted to bore in wood by virtue of a switch that converts it from very demanding masonry boring to less-demanding wood boring. Simply turn the switch back and forth to toggle between the two drilling modes. Another big difference is its SDS chuck: SDS bits simply slide in and out of a spring-loaded chuck. Unlike a regular chuck which can be overtightened or—worse—work loose, an SDS provides a simple slip fit that keeps the bit securely and evenly fastened.

Why it matters: Rotary hammers are expensive industrial-strength power tools. Typically, they’re used by commercial and industrial contractors who do nothing but bore holes in concrete and rock. This is a crossover product that’s inexpensive enough for a homeowner renovating a house who has some very unpleasant work ahead. Better still, this product comes equipped with an easily detachable dust extractor that also serves as a depth guide.
