This weekend, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage—otherwise known as the MythBusters—took the stage in front of 2000 fans dressed as superheroes, monsters and illustrated stars at San Diego Comic Con. In addition to previewing clips from the new season of their Emmy-nominated show MythBusters, the television personalities premiered their cover of the September issue of Popular Mechanics for the first time. Hyneman and Savage were guest editors in the issue—the first in PM's 107-year history. The issue hits stands Aug. 11.

"Popular Mechanics has had Jamie and me as guest editors," Savage announced. When a picture of the September cover flashed on the screen, the crowd erupted in raucous applause. "We're premiering the cover here for the first time ever, and [the issue] is chock full of MythBuster goodness."

During their tenure as guest editors, Hyneman and Savage visited the Popular Mechanics offices in Manhattan, attending editorial meetings, weighing in on story ideas and even suggesting alterations to PM's latest Monster PC. Back in San Francisco, the MythBusters led PM on a behind-the-scenes tour of M5, where their TV show is shot. Hyneman tested motorcycles with PM's automotive editors in Death Valley, and Savage opened up his home workshop to the magazine. Both Hyneman and Savage provided advice, asides and tips throughout the magazine's home, technology and auto sections.

Television and magazines are two very different mediums, but Savage said he enjoyed working with PM on the issue. "Because of the movies, you think a magazine is full of sunlit offices with smart, clever, funny people, avuncular editors and meetings about important stuff," he said. "Popular Mechanics is just like that. Actually, if you cast a movie it wouldn't be as interesting as going to the offices. We had so much fun there. We've had a relationship [with PM] for such a long time, and it's going to continue on for a lot longer."

The September issue won't be on stands until Aug. 11, but get your fix now by checking out the cover above. Also, fans can enter to win a signed cover of the September issue by visiting popularmechanics.com/mythbusterssweeps (Check back on August 1). We will be giving away 10 signed covers to 10 lucky winners in a sweepstakes that will be held from August 1 until August 31, 2009. MythBusters airs Wednesdays at 9 pm on the Discovery Channel.
