Redington CPX Series 6 Weight Flyrod and RISE reel

$300 and $160, respectively
Fly-fishing equipment has a bad habit of getting expensive in a hurry, but Redington's top-end CPX series costs half of what companies such as Orvis or Scott charge for similar rods. While fishing for trout recently in a few Adirondack streams, we found the CPX to have a nice, lightweight feel and balanced action that lets you hurl out some serious line without losing control. The 9-foot rod balances power and finesse with a spirally wrapped graphite layup, while the fully machined aluminum reel features a midsize arbor that gobbles in line with each handle crank.

Plus, there are some smart touches, such as alignment dots that make setup a snap. And the RISE reel has a smooth, satisfyingly clicky rotation—accurate when reeling in slowly, yet it kicks up to speed in an instant when you've got a fish on.
